Ever get the feeling that you’ve somehow been plunked into a Disney cartoon? Well Paperdoll boutique and its owner Joanna Saw is just that. Part fantasy, part reality, 100 percent whimsical charm.
Tell us something about yourself.
I’m 26 year old Leo with a fashion fetish, a first time business owner, an avid chef, a karaoke enthusiast, a spendaholic, and to top it off a retarded romantic.
Why the name Paperdoll?
Well my mother’s to blame really. She’s the one who got me hooked onto fashion the moment she started drawing paperdolls for me to play with, and worse still when she started buying books upon books of paperdolls from all over the world. Also because I sometimes it seems that I am very much like a paperdoll with my closet full of clothes. I mean, who doesn’t feel like that when you really, really, really think about it.
Tell us a little about your boutique concept.
Well firstly I wanted to bring a bit of New York City back to Malaysia with me, while throwing bits and pieces of the stuff I’ve collected from my trips aboard (Europe, Asia, Africa) which have inspired me, into its design. I didn’t maximize the space I rented because doing so would have taken the whole traditional NYC boutique concept and thrown it down the rubbish hatch in an instant, therefore I was sure to make it as cozy and quaint as the one’s I frequent when I’m in New York.
Eclipse defies the woeful and depressing mood all around us due to the recent financial crises by channelling rock ‘n’ roll to give a lil “oomph” to the Spring Summer 2009 collection. Designed to give a strong message of optimism, the collection is rebellious and sassy with vivid, bold colours. High shine jerseys, matt rayons and acetates, all meticulously nipped and tucked hog spotlight of the collection. Adding embroidered pailettes onto the fabrics to give the collection an extra rich summer sparkle. Not forgetting, show stopping and traffic stopping dresses. Bandage dresses with non-constricting corsets come in bright colours or classic black. It’s a sexy feminine with a defiant edge, this collection was inspired by Henri Matisse’s “The Dance”.
Setting foot into our local fashion industry is a trendy concept of ready-to-wear high street clothing boutique that translates catwalk couture into chic pieces for the mass market. Le Ann Maxima recently open its flagship store at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya, which was graced by celebrity friends such as Daphne Iking, Sazzy Falak, Belinda Chee, Aishah Sinclair, Alison J Victor, Raja Atilia and Hannah Lo.

The word out is that if airliners can charge “entrance fee” for every Krispy Kreme donut that is brought into the cabin, they would be making ridiculous profit that would last them through three recessions (that is true, we are the best form of doughnut export). But they can’t. So they would have to scrape through this one then. But let us not get sidetracked.
